Plumbers to Install Bathtub for East Moline Family

Plumbers from Local 25 in Rock Island volunteered to install a bathtub for an East Moline boy left unable to walk or speak after his heart stopped at school.

Ricky Alonso is nine years old. He was a second-grader at Bowlesburg School when he suffered a cardiac event in January 2010. His older brother died a few years earlier from the same heart condition.

His family’s bathroom is on the second floor. His parents, Susana and Juan, are unable to carry him to the second floor, and have been using a small pool to give Ricky baths.

The new tub will be installed in Ricky’s room.

“This project allows us to use our skills to help this family,” said John Winters, one of the plumbers coordinating the installation. “We are honored to join the others who have stepped up to help the Alonso family with time and donations to help make their lives a bit better in the midst of this struggle with their beloved child.”

The project was completed with donations from the Dispatch Good Fellow and the Rock Island Argus Santa Fund, and the support from Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 25.

“The family is very appreciative for all that we have been able to do for them,” said Jean Wells, a reading specialist at the school. “It is an honor and privilege that we are able to help and be a part of their lives.”
